Vienna: The representatives of Iran, China, and Russia in Vienna-based organizations have convened ahead of the upcoming meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (I.A.E.A.) Board of Governors to discuss coordination of their positions on key issues.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Mikhail Ulyanov, the Permanent Representative of Russia to International Organizations in Vienna, shared on X that he met with his counterparts from China and Iran to align their strategies before the IAEA Board of Governors session. The trilateral meeting was deemed beneficial in ensuring a unified approach to the forthcoming discussions.
This meeting served as a preparatory session for the I.A.E.A. Board of Governors meeting, set to occur in mid-June at the Vienna International Center. The agenda includes discussions on Iran’s nuclear activities, particularly focusing on verification and inspection processes under the safeguards agreement and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231. A report by I.A.E.A. Director General Rafael Grossi on Iran’s nuclear program is also anticipated to be a focal point during the session.
During the previous meeting in March, Grossi presented a report on Iran’s cooperation regarding safeguards. At that time, China and Russia expressed support for Iran’s technical engagements with the I.A.E.A. and resisted any attempts to politicize the process.
Iran maintains that its nuclear program is peaceful and conducted under I.A.E.A. oversight, adhering to its commitments under the safeguards agreement. However, Iran has cautioned against the political misuse of I.A.E.A. mechanisms by some Western countries, warning that such actions could undermine cooperation and mutual trust.
