New York:Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Darzi, has emphasized the need for the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) reporting to remain professional, fact-based, and free from political influence. He highlighted that the credibility of the IAEA relies heavily on its impartiality and technical integrity.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Darzi addressed the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, advocating for the essential role of nuclear energy in development and energy security. He referenced Article IV of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which supports the right of all member states to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without discrimination.
Darzi criticized certain states for allegedly weaponizing proliferation concerns to pressure others into abandoning their nuclear fuel cycles. He accused the United States of challenging the rights of NPT States Parties to pursue a full nuclear fuel cycle, including uranium enrichment, which he argued violates Article IV of the treaty.
Furthermore, Darzi condemned the actions of the United States and Israel for launching aggressive campaigns against Iran in 2025 and 2026, targeting its nuclear facilities. He stated these actions led to significant destruction and casualties, including the death of Iran's leader, and were in violation of various international laws and resolutions.
Darzi also criticized Western delegations for their alleged hypocrisy in addressing proliferation concerns while not condemning attacks on safeguarded nuclear facilities. He maintained that Iran remains committed to its international obligations despite facing political and military pressures, and he called for the IAEA to maintain impartiality and technical cooperation.
The Iranian envoy underscored that Iran's cooperation with the IAEA would continue as circumstances allow but stressed that such cooperation should not compromise the safety of Iran's people, facilities, or IAEA inspectors.
