Tehran: Iraq has repatriated 48 Iranian prisoners under a bilateral agreement on the transfer of sentenced prisoners. The Director-General of Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mojtaba Shasti Karimi, confirmed the transfer process, highlighting the ongoing cooperation between the two countries in handling imprisoned nationals.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Shasti Karimi announced on Monday that the 48 Iranian nationals were transferred through the Mehran border crossing. Additionally, he mentioned that another group of 159 prisoners is scheduled to be transferred through the Shalamcheh border crossing on September 20. These actions are part of an agreement between Iran and Iraq, focusing on the transfer of sentenced prisoners, which involves coordination with the Judiciary and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice.

Shasti Karimi also emphasized that one of the primary missions of the Foreign Ministry is to ensure the release, pardon, and transfer of Iranian prisoners back to the country. Moreover, the ministry aims to provide essential legal and consular support to Iranians residing abroad, reflecting its commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of its citizens beyond its borders.
