New York: Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, emphasized that legal Afghan migrants in Iran face no restrictions, highlighting Iran's continued commitment to supporting Afghan refugees amidst ongoing regional challenges. Speaking before the UN Security Council Briefing on the 'Situation in Afghanistan,' Iravani underscored Iran's longstanding policy of sheltering millions of Afghans over four decades, a burden intensified by the U.S. withdrawal in 2021.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Iravani's remarks came as part of a broader discussion on the humanitarian and security crises facing Afghanistan. He pointed out that over 22.9 million Afghans currently require urgent assistance and urged international donors to strengthen their commitments to avoid a collapse in funding. Iravani called for the non-interference of de facto authorities in life-saving operations and stressed the need for Afghanistan's frozen assets to be released to aid economic recovery.
The envoy also addressed security concerns, noting the alarming presence of terrorist organizations in Afghanistan, which pose threats both regionally and globally. He called on Afghanistan's de facto authorities to prioritize counterterrorism efforts and emphasized the international community's role in preventing the country from becoming a terrorist haven.
Highlighting the dire situation for Afghan women and girls, Iravani criticized policies banning their attendance at medical institutes, urging a reconsideration of such measures. He reiterated Iran's humanitarian approach towards Afghan refugees, emphasizing that while legal migrants face no restrictions, those who enter Iran illegally may be repatriated due to security concerns.
Iravani concluded by reaffirming Iran's commitment to Afghanistan's peace and stability through bilateral and regional engagements. He stressed the importance of establishing an inclusive government in Afghanistan to address ongoing challenges and foster economic recovery, while also supporting the renewal of UNAMA's mandate to address the country's issues effectively.
