The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture affirmed that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has achieved a self-sufficiency rate of 68% in mango production, exceeding 89,500 tons annually, through mango cultivation in several regions covering approximately 6,966 hectares. As part of the "Harvest Season" campaign, aimed at spreading awareness about agricultural products and diverse seasonal fruit options, and enhancing the local fruit marketing system to support local farmers, the ministry clarified that the Jazan Region leads in annual production with 60,026 tons, followed by the Makkah Region with 17,915 tons, the Madinah Region with 4,505 tons, the Asir Region with 2,845 tons, the Tabuk Region with 2,575 tons, the Al-Baha Region with 912 tons, the Najran Region with 347 tons, the Eastern Region with 198 tons, Riyadh with 117 tons, and the Qassim Region with 60 tons. The ministry highlighted that mango is one of the economically viable tropical crops in the Kingdom, with a production period extending fro m April to August. The Kingdom cultivates over 20 different varieties of mango, including Tommy Atkins, Keitt, Kent, Fons, Sukkary, Badaami, Indian, Glenn, Langra, Julie, Sensation, Kland, Samak, Awais, Timor, Naomi, Valencia, Omani, Balmar, Thai, and Preibo. Mangoes are known for their numerous health benefits, being rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They promote digestive and heart health, boost immunity, reduce the risk of certain cancers, and alleviate anemia, in addition to benefiting skin and eye health. The 'Harvest Season" campaign aims to educate people about various types of local fruits and their availability in different seasons throughout the year. This initiative aligns with the ministry's policy to enhance local production and consumption, improve quality and safety standards, spread knowledge about agricultural products, raise awareness about diverse seasonal fruit options available in the Kingdom, and enhance the efficiency of locally produced fruit marketing systems to support local fa rmers and increase their financial returns.
