Cairo: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has announced that a newly established agreement between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will be annulled if any antagonistic measures, including the activation of the ‘snapback’ mechanism to reinstate UN sanctions, are taken against Tehran.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Iran and the UN nuclear watchdog signed the agreement in Cairo on Tuesday, seeking to restore cooperation that was previously halted due to Israeli and US hostility towards Iran in June, notably through attacks on its nuclear sites. The agreement was formalized between Araghchi and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi in Cairo.
Araghchi informed reporters on Wednesday that a pivotal element of the new agreement is its recognition of the “new conditions” following the 12-war and the subsequent actions by the Iranian Parliament and the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC). He further stated that the agreement acknowledges Iran’s justified security apprehensions in light of the Israeli-US hostility.
‘The situation changed after the attack, and in our negotiations with the agency, we stressed that cooperation could not proceed as it did before, necessitating a new framework,’ Araghchi stated. He clarified that the agreement limits IAEA inspectors’ access exclusively to monitor the fuel replacement process at the Bushehr nuclear facility.
Araghchi stressed that the agreement would remain effective unless any hostile actions are taken against Iran. ‘For instance, if the ‘snapback mechanism’ is triggered, the implementation of this document will undoubtedly be suspended. Furthermore, Iran’s subsequent responses and actions will be determined at a later stage,’ he concluded.
