Bishkek: President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran highlighted the extensive potential for Iran and India to expand cooperation across various domains, including political, economic, scientific, and cultural fields. He emphasized the importance of stronger bilateral cooperation and efforts to counteract the effects of sanctions as a means to advance economic relations between the two countries. Pezeshkian's remarks were made during a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, where discussions on bilateral ties and regional developments took place.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, President Pezeshkian expressed gratitude to New Delhi for its support during the recent US-Israeli conflict involving Iran and stressed the necessity of enhancing diplomatic efforts to foster peace and security in the region. He noted that his administration's approach has consistently focused on securing peace and resolving disputes through dialogue and negotiations. Pezeshkian criticized the United States for opting for conflict and insecurity rather than utilizing diplomatic mechanisms.
Pezeshkian reiterated Iran's stance against war, affirming the country's duty to safeguard its citizens from danger and establish conditions conducive to peace and security. He cited agreements aimed at resolving outstanding issues and expressed Iran's commitment to fulfilling its obligations, despite what he described as the American side's failure to do the same. He asserted that the continuation of war benefits no party involved and emphasized the need to pursue agreements and mutual understanding.
Highlighting a preference for peace over conflict, Pezeshkian argued that logical reasoning dictates avoiding war, pointing to certain factions within the United States that see their interests tied to ongoing conflict. Prime Minister Modi acknowledged Pezeshkian's perspectives on peace and security, recognizing the Iranian president as a proponent of peace. Modi expressed confidence in Pezeshkian's ability to contribute effectively to peace efforts and anticipated positive outcomes from these endeavors. Agreeing with Pezeshkian, Modi noted that while some may benefit from war, collective efforts should focus on achieving peace, asserting his belief in the eventual triumph of peace and security.
The discussions also covered the latest developments in bilateral cooperation, emphasizing the need to leverage existing capacities to expand economic and trade relations and reinforce strategic partnerships. Key issues addressed included transport and maritime cooperation, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, and ongoing developments at Iran's Chabahar Port.
