Tehran: Hussain Al-Shahristani, President of Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, has stated that no entity can demand that Iran cease its uranium enrichment activities. This assertion comes amidst ongoing discussions about Iran's nuclear program. According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Al-Shahristani responded to a question from an IRNA reporter regarding the U.S. demand for zero enrichment in Iran. He emphasized that the enrichment and peaceful use of nuclear energy for the benefit of people, the economy, and development are fundamental principles enshrined in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Al-Shahristani further stated that the use of nuclear energy for non-peaceful purposes is unacceptable, unlawful, and violates the NPT. He argued that forcing a country to completely abandon enrichment is a mere slogan and that no one can deny a nation's right to peaceful nuclear energy. He also addressed calls from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other parties for Iran to build confidence in its peaceful use of nuclear energy. He highlighted the importance of cooperation with the IAEA and transparency, but stressed that these are only effective if all parties adhere to their commitments. Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi reiterated that Iran will not negotiate over its right to uranium enrichment. He criticized the United States for making what he termed 'unreasonable and illogical' demands during indirect negotiations with Tehran. Additionally, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Leader of the Islamic Revolution, urged U.S. officials to avoid making unfounded claims. He emphasized that Iran does not seek permission from any external entity to enrich uranium.
