Russian Envoy in Vienna Criticizes Snapback Mechanism on Iran

Vienna: Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, has declared that the snapback mechanism intended to reinstate sanctions against Iran is ineffective. He emphasized that although France, Germany, and the UK claim the mechanism has been successfully implemented, these countries have violated the related processes.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, on September 28, 2025, the three European nations took measures at the UN Security Council to reactivate six resolutions that had been previously lifted by the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and the UNSC Resolution 2231. This action is viewed as an exploitation of the dispute resolution mechanism within the Iran nuclear deal by the European trio.

In recent weeks, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has actively worked to prevent the reinstatement of these sanctions. His efforts have included direct negotiations with the European trio, agreements to resume cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Cairo, and proposing constructive solutions during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. However, the alignment of the three European nations with the United States has hindered the effectiveness of these initiatives.

Simultaneously, Araghchi communicated to the UN secretary-general and the president of the UNSC that Iran firmly rejects the reactivation of expired resolutions under Resolution 2231 (2015). He asserted that neither Iran nor any UN member state is obligated to comply with such illegal actions.
