SCO Member States Reject Biased Interpretation of UNSC Resolution 2231: Top Diplomat

Tianjin: Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, announced that leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) have expressed their opposition to Europe’s selective interpretation of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2231. Speaking from Tianjin, China, where he accompanied President Masoud Pezeshkian to the SCO Summit, Gharibabadi emphasized the collective stance of member states, including China, Russia, and Pakistan, against the reactivation of UN sanctions through the so-called snapback mechanism.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Gharibabadi highlighted a clause in the final statement of the summit that stresses the full and proper implementation of Resolution 2231. This, he explained, indicates that European countries cannot selectively invoke the snapback provision while failing to fulfill their own commitments under the resolution.

Gharibabadi also pointed out a significant section of the SCO statement that condemns military actions by Israel and the United States against the Islamic Republic of Iran in June 2025. He noted that these actions included attacks on nuclear facilities and violations of international law.
