Tehran: In a significant observance, residents of Tehran participated in rallies to mark Arbaeen, an event commemorating the sacrifice of Imam Hussein (PBUH) in the 680 AD Battle of Karbala. This event is especially sacred for Shia Muslims globally, as Imam Hussein, along with 17 family members and over 70 companions, was martyred for refusing allegiance to Yazid, the Umayyad ruler.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the rallies in Tehran provided an opportunity for those unable to make the pilgrimage to Karbala in Iraq to participate in the commemorations. The observance is one of the most important in the Shia Muslim calendar, drawing millions of pilgrims to the holy city of Karbala each year. However, not everyone can make this journey, so events in places like Tehran allow for widespread participation in honoring Imam Hussein's legacy.
