Women Hold Lofty Status in Islam, Says Ayatollah Khamenei

Tehran: Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, referring to the interpretations of the Holy Quran about the identity and personality of women, says their status in Islam is so high and lofty that they must be called 'managers, not housekeepers.'

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, women are on par with men in social and political activities, business, government positions, and in other areas, including spiritual conduct, Ayatollah Khamenei said in a meeting with hundreds of women and girls from across the country.

The Leader said Islamic views bring about dignity, honor, growth, and an independent identity for women, warning against Western cultural narratives. "They claim that certain restrictions on women, including the hijab, will hinder their progress, but the Islamic Republic has refuted this false logic and shown that a decently dressed Muslim woman can play a role in all areas more than others."

Referring to the verses of the Holy Quran, he said that men and women have equal roles in the civilizational building, but can equally grow up in achieving spiritual perfection.

Calling Hazrat Fatemeh, the daughter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), a human being adorned with the highest qualities in all areas, Ayatollah Khamenei praised Iranian women for taking a lesson from the one who, according to the Prophet (PBUH), is the master of all women.

Ayatollah Khamenei explained that Islam's rulings on 'relationships between women and men, covering, women's hijab, and encouraging marriage,' are completely in line with the true interests and needs of society.

He also explained the dos and don'ts of men's behavior toward women who are not only doing 'housekeeping, and child-rearing' jobs but have also been present at important events in Islamic history.

The Leader also pointed to the progress Iranian women have made following the Islamic Revolution in different scientific, sports, intellectual, research, and health fields, saying they excelled despite being honorable wives to their husbands and busy with family affairs.

Stating that women and men are two complementary elements in Islam, with many commonalities and some differences stemming from their bodies and natures, Ayatollah Khamenei noted that 'the two complementary elements' play a role in governing human society, continuing the human race, advancing civilization, and meeting society's needs.

'Women in Islam have independence, ability, identity, and the possibility of progress, but the Western and the capitalist view is one of subordination and absorption of women's identity, and denying them their rights,' the Leader added.
