Yemen Claims to Down Saudi Fighter Jet Amid Rising Tensions

Sa'ada:Yemen's armed forces announced that they have downed a Saudi Typhoon fighter jet in the northern province of Sa'ada. Military spokesperson Yahya Saree reported a significant increase in Saudi-led coalition attacks targeting various locations in Yemen.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the incident was confirmed by Lebanon's Al Mayadeen TV channel. The spokesperson stated that the fighter jet, which departed from Taif Air Base, was hit by a surface-to-air missile over Sa'ada. This action was described as a retaliation against attacks on Yemeni territory.

Saree detailed that the Saudi-led coalition executed 42 air and missile strikes within the past 24 hours. These strikes targeted civilian areas in the capital Sana'a and provinces such as Taiz, Lahij, Marib, and Amran, including Mayyun Island. The assaults involved F-15 and Typhoon fighter jets operating from Khamis Mushait and Taif air bases, with additional missile launches from Saudi Arabia's Najran province.

The spokesperson also noted that the coalition has conducted a total of 2,323 air and missile attacks since the escalation began. The renewed conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, which started in July 2026, has led to ongoing calls from Sana'a for the removal of Saudi-led restrictions impacting ports and airports. Yemen seeks the lifting of sanctions and restrictions as a step towards achieving a political settlement. The blockade imposed by Saudi Arabia in 2015 is cited as severely affecting the Yemeni civilian population.
