Tehran: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) to take a prominent role in shaping a new regional economic architecture centered on participation, mutual respect, and shared interests. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the second edition of the Iran-ECO Conference in Tehran, Araghchi emphasized the potential of the organization, which has yet to be fully realized despite laying invaluable foundations for regional cooperation in recent years.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araghchi expressed that the current level of cooperation does not align with the vast capacities of the ECO region. He suggested that ECO could evolve into a successful model of multilateral economic collaboration among neighboring countries. Highlighting the importance of strategic cooperation with Central, South, and West Asian states, he noted that these partnerships would bring added value to all members.
Araghchi stressed the importance of collective decision-making and coordinated action to achieve an ‘ideal ECO.’ He noted that the organization offers a platform for member states to tackle global economic fluctuations, geopolitical challenges, and rapid technological changes together. The foreign minister suggested that ECO could serve as a framework for promoting sustainable development, regional security, and shared prosperity.
In addressing broader international developments, Araghchi criticized the ‘unprecedented and blatant violations’ of human values and international law by the Israeli regime, supported by certain global powers. He warned that such unilateralist trends have destabilized global peace and security, hampering opportunities for international cooperation.
Araghchi underscored the urgent need to strengthen existing multilateral mechanisms and establish new frameworks for collective action. He highlighted the necessity of collaboration among developing countries in multilateral settings, stating that it is no longer a choice but a necessity.
Reflecting on Iran’s experience as a victim of ‘US unilateralism and Israeli adventurism,’ Araghchi reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to being an active and constructive participant in regional and multilateral economic initiatives. He added that the ongoing conference was evidence of Iran’s dedication to fostering multilateral cooperation through the ECO.
