Tehran: Colombian President Gustavo Petro has raised concerns over the interpretation of ‘good use of weapons’ by Israel in Gaza, asserting that the events in the coastal territory amounted to the genocide of Palestinians.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Petro’s remarks came in response to statements made by US President Donald Trump during an address to the Knesset. Trump congratulated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on what he described as a ‘great job’ and commended Israel for its use of American-made weapons, stating, “you’ve won,” and “we make the best weapons in the world, and we’ve given a lot to Israel, . and you used them well.”
Petro questioned this standpoint, particularly in light of the humanitarian toll in Gaza. In a post on his X account, he highlighted the devastating impact of these weapons, citing 200,000 civilian casualties, 70,000 deaths, and the loss of 20,000 babies. He challenged the notion that such outcomes could be seen as a ‘good use of weapons.’
The Colombian leader criticized the international community’s role in supplying arms to Israel during this period, describing it as complicity in what he termed genocide. He argued that such actions do not justify the release of prisoners on either side, nor do they lead to any moral or spiritual justification, but instead represent an endorsement of violence and destruction.
