Tehran: The mausoleum of the late Imam Khomeini near Tehran hosted a mourning ceremony on Wednesday evening to mark the eve of Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hossein (PBUH), and his 72 companions, who were martyred in the Battle of Karbala more than 14 centuries ago. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, senior government officials, and mourners attended the ceremony. According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the ceremony was part of the annual observances that bring together thousands of Shia Muslims from across the country to honor the legacy and sacrifice of Imam Hossein and his companions. Participants engaged in recitations, prayers, and the retelling of the events of Karbala. The event highlighted the significance of Ashura in Shia Islam, emphasizing themes of sacrifice, justice, and standing against oppression. The presence of President Pezeshkian underscored the importance of religious observances in Iran's cultural and political landscape.
