Tehran:Iran's Ambassador and Charg© d'Affaires to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Darzi, has criticized the United States and its allies for allegedly misusing the procedures and powers of the Security Council to further their political aims.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Darzi addressed the UN General Assembly, condemning a recent US draft resolution against Iran. He labeled it as politically motivated, legally baseless, and an attempt to revive the "Panel of Experts" of the now-defunct Committee 1737, an action he views as hypocritical.
The Iranian ambassador praised China and Russia for their vetoes, describing these actions as necessary to uphold the UN Charter and international law. He also acknowledged Somalia and Pakistan for their abstentions. Darzi reiterated Iran's stance that the United States' withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018, along with subsequent non-compliance by European countries, was the root cause of current tensions.
Despite US and Israeli military actions, Darzi stressed that Iran has acted diplomatically in good faith. He criticized the narrative suggesting Iran's nuclear program has military objectives, calling it a false accusation propagated by the Israeli regime and others since 2003. He noted that no International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report has confirmed such claims.
Darzi further criticized the recent resolution by the IAEA's Board of Governors, asserting it was politically driven and ignored the impact of US and Israeli attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities. He argued that any report to the Security Council based on this resolution lacks a legal basis.
Finally, Darzi dismissed allegations made against Iran as baseless, particularly condemning the United States for lacking moral authority on non-proliferation issues. He also pointed out alleged crimes by Israel, arguing that such a regime lacks credibility to lecture on international law.
