Muscat: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has affirmed that Iran and India are dedicated to advancing the development of the strategic Chabahar Port in southern Iran, despite looming threats of sanctions from the United States.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araghchi conveyed the enduring relationship between Iran and India during an interview with India's WION News on the sidelines of a foreign ministerial meeting of Indian Ocean rim countries in Muscat. He highlighted the historical ties between the two nations, describing them as two significant Asian civilizations with a long-standing relationship. Despite occasional challenges, both countries are resolved to maintain their amicable relations.

Araghchi pointed out that the obstacles impeding the enhancement of Iran-India relations stem from interference by external parties. He specifically criticized the U.S. decision to cease exempting India's role in the Chabahar Port project from its sanctions. Araghchi noted that while India is in discussions with the U.S., Iran respects India's autonomy in making its own decisions regarding the project.

The Chabahar Port, situated on the Sea of Oman, holds strategic importance for both Iran and India. In May 2024, the two countries signed a decade-long agreement to jointly develop the port, aiming to bolster trade routes and economic cooperation in the region.
