Tehran: Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, has strongly criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's accusations regarding the suspected explosion near the United Arab Emirates' nuclear power plant, calling them "baseless and selective."

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei responded to Merz's claims in a message posted in German on his X account. He argued that the unfounded accusation highlights a double standard among Western leaders, who have historically shown indifference to attacks on Iran's peaceful nuclear sites. Baqaei accused Merz of hypocrisy, pointing out that attacks by the US and the Zionist regime on Iran's nuclear facilities, which are under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency, have not been condemned and were at times justified.

Baqaei further characterized the incident near the UAE nuclear plant as "a false flag operation by the enemies of peace and reconciliation in the region." He questioned why Merz referenced "international law" and "regional security" to accuse Iran, especially when the UAE itself has not officially blamed Iran for the incident.

The spokesperson emphasized that if an attack on a nuclear facility threatens regional safety, then this principle should be universally applied, rather than selectively based on Western political interests. Baqaei also criticized Merz's anti-Iran rhetoric, likening it to the character 'Judge Adam' in Blake Morrison's play 'The Broken Pot,' who claims to be a sole arbiter of justice while ignoring his own transgressions.
