Iran Dismisses ‘Unfounded’ Report on Uranium Enrichment Rollback

London: The Iranian embassy in London has dismissed a British report claiming that Iran is prepared to reduce its uranium enrichment levels. The embassy criticized the report as lacking credibility and distorting the realities of Iran’s nuclear program.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the British newspaper The Telegraph reported on August 24 that Iran was supposedly ready to lower its uranium enrichment from 60% to 20% to avoid the re-imposition of United Nations sanctions and further military actions by the United States and Israel. The Telegraph has previously made allegations concerning Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

The Iranian embassy expressed concerns about what it described as ‘unfounded and biased’ reporting by the British daily. It emphasized that the articles are based on ambiguous and unreliable sources, which undermine the credibility of journalism and misrepresent the situation in Iran. The embassy called for corrections to these reports and requested equal space for the publication of its official response.

The embassy further criticized the reliance on unspecified and unverifiable sources, stating that such practices damage public confidence and could harm international relations grounded in mutual respect. The responsibility for the repercussions of these publications, the embassy argued, lies with those who disseminate such material.

The context of these reports includes a recent conflict, where Washington and Tel Aviv bombed Iranian nuclear sites during a 12-day war initiated by Israel on June 13. This conflict also involved airstrikes on Iranian residential areas, resulting in over 1,000 Iranian casualties, most of whom were civilians.

Meanwhile, Britain, France, and Germany, collectively known as the E3 and part of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, have threatened to trigger the snapback mechanism to restore UN sanctions against Iran. This is contingent upon Iran resuming negotiations over its nuclear program. Tehran maintains its readiness for negotiations that ensure its peaceful nuclear rights, opposing the zero enrichment stance advocated by Western powers.
