Tehran: Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei claims that reports regarding oil transport through the Strait of Hormuz are part of a media and psychological campaign. In response to assertions from US officials and media outlets that the Strait of Hormuz is completely open, with figures ranging from 5 million to 17 million barrels per day, and some sources citing a 400% traffic surge, Baqaei stated on Monday during his weekly press conference that these figures are inconsistent. He added that this is part of the psychological and media warfare launched by adversaries.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei attributed the situation to the insecurity imposed on the region and the Strait of Hormuz by the US and the Israeli regime since February 28, 2026. He emphasized the need for both Iran and Afghanistan to work towards boosting bilateral trade.

Regarding Iran-Afghanistan trade, Baqaei noted that increasing trade requires commitment and effort from both parties. He mentioned a productive meeting between the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs of Afghanistan, Mullah Baradar, and President Masoud Peezeshkian. The meeting discussed facilitating economic cooperation, particularly through reducing border and customs barriers.

Baqaei highlighted that since the meeting, significant measures have been put into action, expressing optimism about increasing economic ties between the two countries and removing existing obstacles.
