Tehran: Iran will not allow the war to end on terms dictated by the party that initiated the aggression, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei says, stressing Tehran's determination to defend its territorial integrity and national sovereignty.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei, speaking at his weekly press conference, emphasized the seriousness and determination of Iranian officials to defend the country's territory. In response to a query regarding President Masoud Pezeshkian's recent remarks about ending the war from a position of strength, Baqaei dismissed interpretations suggesting any willingness to make concessions to adversaries.
He stated, "We will show no leniency toward the aggressors, because . the Islamic Republic of Iran did not start the war and has defended its right, territorial integrity, and national sovereignty. Naturally, the aggressor must be held accountable. We certainly did not start the war, but we will not allow the war to end on the terms of the aggressor."
Baqaei reiterated President Pezeshkian's stance that Iranians would not yield to coercion or domination by enemies, highlighting the unified response of all branches of the Iranian state during the 40-day war and the earlier 12-day conflict. He emphasized that the determination of the Iranian leadership to defend the nation and reject excessive demands is unequivocal.
Addressing reports in Western media about potential US bases in Europe being targeted if hostilities resume, Baqaei confirmed Iran's position on Bulgaria and reports of US refueling aircraft leaving the country. He criticized Bulgaria's actions as contrary to international law, clarifying that Iran has no issue with the Bulgarian people but views the situation as support for US and Israeli military aggression against Iran.
Baqaei argued that countries allowing their facilities to be used by the US and Israel for military actions against Iran could be seen as partaking in aggression under international law. He urged countries providing bases and facilities for aggression against Iran to reconsider their stance.
He stressed that Iran reserves the right to target the source of any aggressive actions against it, consistent with international law, asserting that Iran will not show leniency in defending its sovereignty.
Additionally, Baqaei highlighted the Foreign Ministry's ongoing efforts to reform its administrative system, with tangible improvements noted in consular services, particularly during the Arbaeen pilgrimage. He acknowledged the ministry's diplomatic efforts amid challenging conditions imposed by conflicts with the US and Israel over the past year and a half.
When questioned about reports of Iran being offered membership in a proposed trilateral defense arrangement involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye, Baqaei denied receiving any official invitation, noting that regional proposals have focused on dialogue and collective security.
