Tehran: Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali has announced that relations between Iran and Russia have gained significant momentum under the leadership of President Masoud Pezeshkian. The two nations are currently pursuing a strategic partnership that is anchored in long-term mutual interests.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, during an exclusive interview in Moscow, Ambassador Jalali emphasized that Iran's approach towards Russia is strategic and operates independently of its relations with Western countries. He dismissed the notion that Tehran's closer ties with Moscow are primarily influenced by its relationships with Western nations. Jalali noted that while Iran has consistently sought constructive relations with Western countries, those efforts have often been undermined by Western deception.
Jalali further highlighted that Iran views Russia as an important neighboring nation and a major global power. He attributed the growth in bilateral ties to the strategic vision of the late Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. Jalali remarked that the Islamic Revolution Leader's deep and insightful approach towards fostering relations with neighbors, especially Russia, has significantly strengthened ties over the past two years.
The ambassador clarified that Iran's foreign policy towards Russia, China, and Western countries is firmly rooted in maintaining national independence while adhering to the principles of dignity, wisdom, and prudence.
In anticipation of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Jalali revealed that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin are scheduled to meet face-to-face for the sixth time. Since taking office in August 2024, President Pezeshkian has also engaged in six phone conversations with President Putin.
Moreover, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have maintained close contact, having held 12 in-person meetings and 17 phone conversations during the same period. Their latest meeting occurred two weeks ago in Bishkek.
Jalali identified five key pillars that have bolstered the expansion of Iran-Russia ties over the past two years: the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty, free trade with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), financial and banking mechanisms, and energy cooperation. The free trade agreement, effective since May 15, 2026, has eliminated tariffs on 87 percent of goods traded between Iran and the EAEU, offering new opportunities for Iranian exporters.
The ambassador also highlighted the significance of the North-South Corridor, energy collaboration, gas projects, and nuclear power development as major areas for enhancing economic relations. He noted that both countries are working towards establishing direct banking links and independent payment mechanisms to boost bilateral trade, with many financial and banking challenges being addressed through ongoing discussions.
