Iran Secures Membership in IAEA General Committee Despite US Opposition

Vienna: States must regain the authority they have lost to private entities on artificial intelligence (AI), President Sergio Mattarella said during a meeting at the Quirinale with a delegation from the World Jurist Association and the World Law Foundation on Tuesday.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Iran to international organizations in Vienna highlighted the United States' opposition to Iran's membership in the General Committee of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conference. Despite this opposition, Iran's membership was approved following a secret ballot supported by several countries, marking a setback for the United States.

Reza Najafi informed reporters that the conference's General Committee is responsible for reviewing the agenda, session schedules, and credentials. He stated that Iran had been nominated for committee membership by the MESA group, but the U.S. opposed this move, forcing a vote.

Najafi noted that several countries backed Iran's position, leading to a secret ballot. The vote resulted in the confirmation of Iran's membership in the committee. This development is seen as another political defeat for the United States, which had attempted to prevent Iran's delegation head, Mr. Eslami, from attending the conference by pressuring the host country.
