Tehran: A member of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has called for leveraging emerging opportunities in the changing global order, saying expanded cooperation with independent countries can help Iran mitigate the impact of sanctions.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Mohammad Mehdi Shahriari emphasized that changes in global relations have created a favorable environment for Iran to strengthen ties with neighboring countries and emerging economic powers. Shahriari highlighted the importance of using this opportunity to enhance economic relations, expand trade, and bolster security and political cooperation, thereby reducing Iran's reliance on Western-dominated structures.
The lawmaker, representing the northeastern city of Bojnurd, also underscored the potential role of BRICS in countering unilateral US sanctions. He suggested that the bloc could serve as a platform for greater cooperation among its member states and the development of new mechanisms within the global economy. However, Shahriari warned that realizing this potential would necessitate political will, coordination among members, and the establishment of practical mechanisms across the banking, financial, and trade sectors.
Shahriari further stated that Iran should focus on strengthening its domestic capabilities while actively pursuing economic and political diplomacy. By capitalizing on opportunities presented by the shifting global order, Iran could enhance its bargaining power, mitigate the impact of sanctions, and bolster national security through expanded cooperation with independent countries and neighbors.
Turning attention to US-Iran relations, Shahriari argued that continued US pressure on Iran signifies Washington's challenges in fulfilling its objectives. He noted that if economic sanctions and political pressure were effective in deterring Iran from pursuing its rights and national interests, the United States would not resort to escalating military threats and regional tensions.
Moreover, Shahriari criticized the US for undermining its credibility in the region by pursuing policies that threaten regional security while simultaneously claiming to support dialogue and peace. He asserted that such contradictory measures have eroded Washington's standing among regional countries and the public.
