Iran’s Strategic Patience in Foreign Policy Gains Recognition from American Analyst

New york: American analyst Giorgio Cafiero has highlighted Iran’s strategic patience and resistance to external pressures as key components of its foreign policy, particularly during and after the June war involving the United States and Israel. According to Cafiero, Iran has shown a commitment to diplomacy without compromising its national dignity, proving its approach is both resilient and tactically sound.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Cafiero, who serves as an adjunct assistant professor at Georgetown University and an adjunct fellow at the American Security Project, shared his insights in an exclusive interview. He emphasized that Iran’s foreign policy is primarily focused on deterrence against potential aggression from the American-Israeli alliance and bolstering economic resilience amid ongoing Western sanctions. This strategy involves enhancing military preparedness and fostering partnerships with non-Western powers, such as China, to reduce reliance on external actors.

Cafiero noted that during the 12-day conflict, Iran’s diplomatic efforts were marked by a balance between resilience and engagement. Tehran maintained its stance against coercive negotiations, insisting on diplomacy based on mutual respect. Despite facing attacks, Iran actively participated in diplomatic meetings with the European E3 and the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, emphasizing its commitment to dialogue and multilateralism. The foreign minister’s travel to Turkey during this period further highlighted Iran’s resolve and resourcefulness.

Cafiero also observed that the shift in the U.S. administration’s foreign policy towards Iran, particularly after the conflict, showcases a complex dynamic. He pointed out the contradictions in the Trump administration’s approach, which, despite being pro-Israel, may avoid direct conflict with Iran due to domestic considerations. However, Iran’s engagement with regional powers like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, as part of its ‘Neighbors First’ policy, has led to a noticeable shift in these countries’ stances during the conflict, reinforcing the importance of regional diplomacy.

Furthermore, Cafiero highlighted Iran’s strategic move to deepen ties with Central Asia, aligning with China’s Belt and Road Initiative. This shift represents a broader strategy to engage with emerging multipolar structures, enhancing Iran’s global standing and reducing its vulnerability to Western pressures. Iran’s participation in organizations like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS+ illustrates its pivot towards the Global South, aiming to create alternative economic and political partnerships.

Overall, Cafiero’s analysis underscores Iran’s strategic vision of safeguarding its sovereignty and stability while navigating a complex international landscape. By prioritizing pragmatic diplomacy and regional cooperation, Iran aims to fortify its position on the global stage, ensuring resilience against external pressures.
