New International Flotilla to Challenge Gaza Blockade Set to Depart from Italy

Rome: A new international flotilla is preparing to head toward the Gaza Strip in a fresh effort to break the Israeli blockade, media reports said Sunday.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition announced that the flotilla will depart from Italy on September 24, bound for Gaza.

The announcement comes as most of the ships of the Global Sumud Flotilla have already left a port in Sicily, Italy, and begun their journey toward the besieged area. The report added that before sailing to Gaza, the vessels will first head to Greek coasts, where all the ships are expected to regroup before continuing the voyage.

Earlier, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas had called for mass demonstrations outside Israeli, US, and other supportive states’ embassies, urging global backing for the flotilla and stressing that it must be protected until its arrival in Gaza, despite Tel Aviv’s threats.

Meanwhile, foreign ministers of Turkey, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Ireland, Libya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mexico, Pakistan, Qatar, Oman, Slovenia, South Africa, and Spain have recently issued a joint statement expressing concern over the safety of the international convoy seeking to challenge the Gaza blockade.
