Tehran: Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed solidarity with the Iranian people and praised their courage and resistance as he met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Putin asked President Masoud Pezeshkian to convey his greetings to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei during their meeting. Putin emphasized that the Russian people stood in solidarity with the Iranian people, who he said were defending their interests against adversaries. He admired the courage and resilience of the Iranian people, highlighting the steady development of trade and economic relations between Russia and Iran despite challenging military and political circumstances. Putin also underscored the importance of humanitarian cooperation between the two nations and expressed Moscow's commitment to supporting Tehran by supplying essential goods. On regiona l developments, he noted Russia's welcoming of a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States, albeit acknowledging the fragile nature of the ceasefire. During the Shanghai Plus summit, which was attended by senior officials from member states and partners of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Putin remarked on the increasing international attention to the organization's multifaceted activities. The summit, held under the theme 'The United Nations as a key element of a just world order: The contribution of Shanghai Plus countries to the formation of a multipolar world,' emphasized honest and mutually beneficial cooperation among member states. Putin highlighted the United Nations' central role in global affairs, describing it as a unique platform for dialogue, diplomacy, and cooperation. He advocated for expanding the membership of its institutions, including the Security Council, to include countries from the Global South and East, to enhance the organization's effectiveness. He empha sized the irreversible process of forming a new, just, and multipolar world order, with many countries striving to independently determine their destinies and participate actively in international affairs. The summit concluded with the adoption of a declaration and the signing of several documents. The slogan for the summit was '25 Years of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization: Together for Peace, Development and Sustainable Prosperity.'
