New york: Iran's ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, has declared that Washington's attempt to advance an anti-Iran resolution in the UN Security Council has collapsed, crediting Russia and China for their unwavering support.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Jalali expressed on his X account late Friday that the United States aimed to increase pressure on Iran through a new resolution. However, the initiative was thwarted by the joint veto from Russia and China. Jalali thanked these countries for their steadfast support of Iran and for blocking an unfair and politically motivated initiative, noting that their combined veto was a landmark event in the Council's history.

Jalali also mentioned that the outdated tool of sanctions has lost its effectiveness, emphasizing that the future global landscape will be shaped by nations that advocate for a multipolar order and multilateral cooperation.

The draft resolution was presented for a vote at the United Nations Security Council on September 17, 2026, in New York, where the United States aimed to extend the mandate of UN experts monitoring the sanctions that were reimposed on Iran under the snapback mechanism. The proposal garnered 11 votes in favor, with Pakistan and Somalia abstaining, but ultimately failed due to the vetoes from Russia and China, effectively halting the effort to maintain independent monitoring of the reinstated sanctions.
