ROME: Iranian Ambassador to Rome Mohammad Reza Sabouri met with Riccardo Guariglia, Secretary General of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to address pressing consular matters, including the situations of two detained individuals-one Iranian and one Italian.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the meeting took place at the Italian Foreign Ministry, where Sabouri and Guariglia engaged in discussions concerning Iranian citizen Mohammad Abedini, who is currently detained in Italy. The Iranian Embassy in Italy described the meeting as "friendly" and noted that Abedini is held on what they claim are unfounded accusations.
The talks also covered the detention of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, who was arrested in Iran on December 19, 2024, for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic's laws. During the meeting, Ambassador Sabouri emphasized that Iranian authorities have extended humanitarian considerations to Sala, allowing her repeated phone calls with her family. He urged the Italian government to reciprocate by ensuring humane treatment for Abedini and working toward his immediate release.
