Rasht: Iran has initiated its region-oriented policy centered on the Caspian Sea, emphasizing the strategic significance of fostering closer ties with the four littoral states, stated Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Gharibabadi made these remarks during a broadcast on National TV, following the commencement of the first meeting of governors from Caspian coastal provinces in Rasht, northern Iran. The event, held under the slogan ‘Caspian: A Bridge for Friendship and Regional Development,’ seeks to enhance regional cooperation, broaden economic interactions, and boost coordination on sustainable development and environmental protection in the world’s largest enclosed body of water. The gathering welcomes delegations from nine foreign regions and five Iranian provinces.
Gharibabadi highlighted the significance of this assembly, indicating that last year’s summit of prime ministers set the stage for the current meeting in Rasht. He emphasized that Iran’s approach toward its neighbors aligns with a broader region-oriented policy focused on the Caspian. He acknowledged the extensive capacities of the Caspian littoral states and the strong relations Iran maintains with the four coastal countries.
He clarified that this focus does not imply neglecting other states in Central Asia or the Caucasus, noting that Iran continues to engage in ‘active cooperation’ with them. Gharibabadi pointed out the diverse opportunities within the Caspian region, including environmental cooperation, tourism, transportation and logistics, as well as economic and commercial collaboration.
Highlighting the importance of the North-South Corridor, Gharibabadi noted that Iran, Azerbaijan, and Russia-principal countries in the project-are all Caspian littoral states, underlining the corridor’s strategic value. He stated that the main objective of the Rasht meeting is to develop a roadmap linking the provinces, ensuring that decisions lead to implementation.
Gharibabadi also mentioned Iran’s participation in other regional frameworks, citing the country’s capacities in neighboring countries and its involvement in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS, and ECO frameworks. He encouraged Iranian executive bodies to expand bilateral cooperation with members of these organizations.
