Beirut: Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has urged the government to file another complaint with the UN Security Council and called for an emergency council meeting over continued Israeli attacks on civilians in southern Lebanon. Israeli forces continue their crimes targeting civilians, children, and students, Berri was quoted as saying by Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen TV on Wednesday, citing the latest incident in the southern town of al-Tayri, where a drone strike hit a vehicle and wounded several people.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Berri emphasized that Lebanon has adhered to UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and the US-brokered ceasefire reached on November 27, 2024, following two months of escalating hostilities. However, he expressed that Lebanon was ‘unfairly criticized’ despite its commitment.
Israeli forces were required under the deal to withdraw from southern Lebanon within 60 days, but Tel Aviv has kept troops in five strategic positions and violated the truce thousands of times since it was signed. An overnight Israeli attack on the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp in the southern city of Sidon killed at least 13 people.
