Egyptian Military Intervention in Yemen Allegedly Supported by Israel

CAIRO: Israeli sources have suggested that Egypt is allegedly planning airstrikes against the Houthi movement in Yemen, purportedly under Israeli influence, as tensions escalate over security and economic concerns in the region.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Yehoshua Meir Lichter, an Israeli researcher affiliated with the Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University, stated in a message on X (formerly Twitter) that "classified information" indicates an imminent Egyptian military intervention. The operation, reportedly supported by Israel, aims to counter the Houthis and address the decline in Suez Canal revenues. Lichter claims that the Egyptian Air Force is preparing offensive measures against the Houthis, who have inflicted significant economic damage on Egypt.

Mohamed Mahmoud Mehran, an expert in international law, remarked that Egypt is entitled to take necessary actions to safeguard its national security, especially when maritime navigation is threatened. Mehran pointed out that international law, including Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, supports a nation's right to self-defense. He emphasized that the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention allows states to secure maritime routes and advised that any Egyptian military action should be proportional to the threat level and conform to international legal standards.

Mehran also warned that Israel's ongoing violations in the region contribute to rising tensions, urging the international community to ensure adherence to international law and promote regional stability.
