End of War Only Solution to Strait of Hormuz Crisis, Says Iran’s UN Mission

New york: Iran's mission to the United Nations has declared that the only sustainable resolution to the ongoing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz is the cessation of war, the lifting of the naval blockade, and the restoration of regular maritime transit.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Iran's UN mission made this announcement on Wednesday, emphasizing that the practical path forward in this strategic waterway is evident. The mission criticized the United States for pursuing what it described as a politically motivated and incomplete draft resolution at the UN Security Council, under the pretense of promoting freedom of navigation.

This statement was issued in response to the US initiative to prepare the draft resolution, which Washington claims is aimed at safeguarding free shipping and ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz. However, the Iranian mission refuted this claim, asserting that Washington's actions are intended to advance its own political agenda and legitimize unlawful measures, rather than genuinely resolving the crisis.

The Iranian mission called on UN member states to act based on logic, fairness, and principle, urging them to reject the US draft and refrain from sponsoring or supporting it. This appeal followed US President Donald Trump's announcement that 'Project Freedom' would be temporarily suspended in an effort to secure an agreement to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite this, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Tuesday that, under Trump's orders, the United States had already submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council. This draft calls for the protection of shipping and security in the strait and was prepared in collaboration with Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar.

For any Security Council resolution to pass, it requires nine votes in favor and no veto from the five permanent members. A previous anti-Iran draft concerning Hormuz was vetoed by China and Russia on April 7.

Iran has maintained control over the Strait of Hormuz following the US-Israeli war of aggression that commenced on February 28. Iran asserts that its control is necessary to safeguard its own security as well as the security of this vital waterway. Meanwhile, the US imposed a blockade on Iranian ports and ships after a ceasefire between the two nations took effect on April 8. Iran contends that this blockade constitutes a violation of the ceasefire agreement.
