Kabul: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has emphasized the interconnected nature of Iran and Afghanistan's security and stability, advocating for enhanced cooperation between Tehran and Kabul. During his meeting with Mohammad Hasan Akhund, the acting prime minister of Afghanistan, in Kabul on Sunday, Araghchi expressed satisfaction with the overall security established in Afghanistan after four decades. He highlighted the acceptance of diplomats at a high level as a testament to the strong relations between Iran and the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araghchi underscored that Iran's security and stability are reliant on Afghanistan's, urging for expanded collaboration with the Islamic Emirate. The foreign minister also addressed the ongoing water dispute between the two nations, insisting on the full implementation of the Helmand River Treaty of 1973. The treaty mandates Afghanistan to allow water flow from Helmand into Iran, a provision that has not been fully observed due to factors such as excessive irrigation and dam construction in Afghanistan.
Araghchi pointed out the need for heightened cooperation to tackle the water dispute and the rising number of Afghan refugees in Iran. He reiterated Iran's commitment to repatriating illegal Afghan refugees. Meanwhile, the Afghan leader advocated for more frequent diplomatic visits to bolster political and economic ties between the two countries.
Araghchi's visit to Kabul marks his first since his appointment as Iran's foreign minister, accompanied by a team of economic experts. The discussions in Kabul aim to address various bilateral issues and strengthen the partnership between Iran and Afghanistan.
