Tehran: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi underscored the importance of establishing an inclusive government in Syria during a press conference held in Tehran on Monday. The two diplomats emphasized the preservation of Syria’s territorial integrity and the respect for all ethnic and religious groups within the country.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the discussions between Araghchi and Al Busaidi extended to a range of regional issues. Both ministers called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and advocated for the establishment of humanitarian aid corridors to alleviate the ongoing humanitarian crisis. On the subject of Yemen, Araghchi condemned actions by the United States and Israel, reaffirming Iran’s commitment to Yemen’s territorial integrity and the need to resume peace talks to prevent further conflict.
Araghchi also addressed the topic of communications with the United States, clarifying that no messages were exchanged during the current visit. He acknowledged Oman’s historical role in facilitating communication during past nuclear negotiations, noting that any necessary messages are now conveyed through the Swiss Embassy.
The meeting between Araghchi and Al Busaidi also highlighted the strengthening relations between Iran and Oman. Araghchi pointed out that trade between the two nations had tripled from 2020 to 2023, reaching $2.5 billion in the past year. Plans for an economic commission meeting in Muscat next month were announced, aiming to further enhance bilateral ties.
Omani Foreign Minister Al Busaidi emphasized the historical depth of Iran-Oman relations. He delivered a written message from Sultan Haitham bin Tariq to Iranian officials, underscoring the significance of continued consultations and cooperation. Al Busaidi reiterated Oman’s commitment to a policy of non-interference, particularly concerning Syria, and its support for Syria’s sovereignty and regional role. He stated, “We seek to align efforts within the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council to support Syria’s independence and promote common goals.”
