New delhi: Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, has clarified that Iran's diplomatic relationships with other countries are never intended to be against India, emphasizing the importance of bilateral ties respecting international law.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei made these remarks during an interview with India's India Today, ahead of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's visit to India for the BRICS foreign ministers' meeting. Baqaei underscored that the decisions regarding India's relationships with other nations remain New Delhi's prerogative. The BRICS meeting, hosted by India, aims to address regional stability, multilateral cooperation, and economic resilience.
Baqaei reiterated that Iran's foreign relations are rooted in the principle that they should not undermine third countries, aligning with international legal standards. He also highlighted Iran's military capabilities, referencing Tehran's strategic considerations following US President Donald Trump's threats and the recent ceasefire agreement with the United States and Israel.
The spokesperson elaborated on Iran's diplomatic history with the US, citing significant events such as the US withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement and the assassination of IRGC Quds Force Commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani. Baqaei mentioned Iran's counterproposal to resolve ongoing tensions and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which the US rejected, further attributing the maritime and energy crises to the actions of the US and Israel.
In the interview, Baqaei questioned the absence of global pressure for Israel's nuclear disarmament, contrasting this with Iran's adherence to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), unlike Israel. Addressing potential military threats, he asserted Iran's readiness to defend its territory and uphold international law, stating, "We have no other choice other than fighting back ferociously."
