Tehran: Iran is ready to resume diplomacy with the United States, provided that Washington abandons its 'maximalist' demands and ceases what Iran describes as 'maritime piracy' against its ships in the Persian Gulf. President Masoud Pezeshkian made this statement during a phone conversation with Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, where they discussed regional and international developments, as well as bilateral relations.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, President Pezeshkian accused the United States and Israel of committing war crimes against Iran during a recent conflict. He cited the assassination of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution and senior officials, alongside attacks on crucial public infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and safeguarded nuclear facilities, as clear violations of international law.
Pezeshkian further criticized Washington for its provocative measures, including imposing an illegal blockade on Iranian ports, which he described as breaches of international regulations. He warned that these actions could further escalate tensions in the region.
Despite these challenges, Pezeshkian reiterated Iran's willingness to engage in diplomacy to find a 'fair resolution' to the conflict and restore peace and security. He emphasized that this goal depends on the United States abandoning its 'maximalist approach' and halting its 'provocative actions.'
Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi urged for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions. She highlighted the importance of Japan's bilateral relations with Iran and expressed hope for the resumption of negotiations between Tehran and Washington, which could potentially lead to an agreement.
