Iran Reports Massive Environmental Damage from US-Israeli War

Tehran: The Department of Environment has released a report on the environmental damage caused by the US-Israeli aggression on Iran, warning that the scale of destruction in some cases came close to threatening the country's habitability.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the detailed report, released on Monday, outlines impacts in four key areas, including industrial infrastructure, buildings, protected ecosystems, and major oil storage sites. Attacks targeting key production, industrial, and service units in 10 provinces, namely East Azarbaijan, Alborz, Bushehr, Tehran, Khorasan Razavi, Khuzestan, Markazi, Yazd, Gilan, and Fars, resulted in environmental damage ranging from low to severe.

The report also noted that environmental protection offices and facilities in multiple provinces were hit, with damage recorded across 20 counties. In one notable case, the Natural History and Biodiversity Museum in Karaj sustained heavy destruction.

Some 13 protected areas including coastal zones, wetlands, and wildlife reserves in seven provinces, namely Hormuzgan, Markazi, Sistan-and-Baluchestan, Fars, Kurdistan, Alborz, and Tehran, suffered varying levels of damage-from minor to very severe.

A major source of pollution stemmed from fires at oil storage facilities in Tehran Province, where more than 360,000 cubic meters of fuel burned, resulting in nearly one million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, along with around 4,000 tons of hazardous volatile compounds. Separate attacks on fuel tanks in Alborz Province released an additional 53,000 tons of carbon dioxide.

The Department of Environment said it is compiling documentation to pursue the case through international bodies.
