Iran Warns UN of Environmental Risks from US Military Actions in Persian Gulf

Tehran: Vice president and head of the Department of Environment has warned UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about the potentially devastating environmental consequences of US military actions in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Shina Ansari expressed concern over the environmental consequences of any military action in the fragile and vital ecosystem of the region in a formal letter on Friday.

Ansari highlighted that the continuation of military threats in a region with a high concentration of oil, gas, petrochemical, and maritime infrastructure would constitute a dangerous situation for regional and global peace, security, and the environment.

Referring to Article 21 of the 1972 Stockholm Declaration and Article 2 of the 1992 Rio Declaration, she emphasized that any military action leading to widespread marine pollution, destruction of coastal habitats, or harm to biodiversity could be considered a violation of customary international obligations to prevent transboundary harm.

Ansari also pointed to past conflicts in the region, including attacks on oil and industrial facilities, saying previous military confrontations had shown that environmental impacts were not confined to a specific time or territory and could affect generations to come.
