UNGA Resolution on Ukraine Criticized by Iran for Lacking Peaceful Solutions

New york city: The permanent mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations has articulated its negative stance on a draft resolution related to the Ukraine conflict during the 23rd plenary meeting of the eleventh emergency special session of the United Nations General Assembly, which took place on February 24, 2026.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Iran's representative reiterated Tehran's unwavering position since 2022, highlighting its commitment to resolving disputes peacefully through dialogue and adherence to international law, including the UN Charter. The envoy stressed the importance of respecting sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and internationally recognized borders, as well as avoiding the threat or use of force.

The Iranian official expressed Iran's support for a lasting peace in Ukraine, emphasizing that a sustainable solution must tackle the core issues of the conflict, such as provocative actions and decisions by certain states and NATO. He lamented that the draft resolution failed to address these fundamental problems, arguing that it was introduced at an inopportune moment and without transparent consultations. The representative voiced concerns that the resolution could exacerbate divisions and serve geopolitical rivalries rather than fostering lasting peace.

Additionally, Iran firmly denied any accusations of supporting a specific party in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The resolution, primarily supported by Western countries, was passed with 107 votes in favor, 12 against, and 51 abstentions, with the United States abstaining and Russia voting against.
