Tehran: Head of Iran's Department of Environment Shina Ansari and Indonesia's Minister of Environment Muhammad Jumhur Hidayat have reviewed the development of environmental cooperation between the two countries. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the BRICS Environment Ministers' Meeting, underscoring the shared commitment to addressing environmental challenges.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Ansari highlighted the mutual environmental capacities of Iran and Indonesia and emphasized the significance of strengthening bilateral cooperation. She pointed to the necessity of exchanging experiences, technical knowledge, and expanding expert-level collaboration. Ansari's focus areas included biodiversity protection, natural habitats, forests, water resources, marine ecosystems, climate change, and waste management.
Hidayat, on the other hand, emphasized the expansion of specialized and technical environmental interactions between the two nations. He highlighted Indonesia's efforts in combating plastic pollution and stressed the importance of international cooperation and consensus on operational mechanisms for waste management, particularly in coastal regions.
Both parties agreed on the importance of continuing consultations and utilizing multilateral mechanisms, especially BRICS, to broaden environmental cooperation. The meeting was part of the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting held on August 18th in New Delhi, within the framework of India's 2026 BRICS chairmanship under the theme: 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Collaboration, and Sustainability.'
