Iran Urges 2026 FIFA World Cup Hosts to Comply with Their Commitments

Tehran: Iran has called on the hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to fulfill their commitments to keep sports free from political influence. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei emphasized this stance while addressing reporters, highlighting the importance of maintaining the apolitical nature of football.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei expressed concerns that the principle of preventing the politicization of football is not being observed in practice. He addressed speculations regarding potential obstacles to the Iranian national football team’s participation in the tournament and its draw ceremony. Baqaei assured that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is dedicated to ensuring the Iranian national team’s effective and robust presence in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Baqaei mentioned that the officials from Iran’s national football team have already submitted their visa applications. He stressed the urgency, saying, “Given the time constraints, we hope the host governments adhere to their commitments regarding visa issuance without any political considerations.”

Furthermore, Baqaei reiterated that FIFA’s commitments concerning this matter are explicitly outlined and advised the host countries to operate within the same framework.
