Beirut: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun expressed his desire for Lebanon to remain a key focus of U.S. foreign policy, highlighting the complex and challenging situation the country currently faces.
According to Iraqi News Agency, Aoun emphasized the critical role of the United States in exerting pressure on Israel to prevent further attacks on Beirut's southern suburbs and infrastructure, as well as halting the expansion of occupied areas in southern Lebanon. He underscored the necessity for U.S. support in Lebanon's efforts to reclaim full sovereignty over its territory.
Aoun reiterated that Lebanese sovereignty must not be compromised and stated that the government aims to ensure that the Lebanese Army and legitimate state institutions maintain sole authority over the entire territory. He described Lebanon's demand for sovereignty as a natural right, essential for extending governmental authority throughout the nation.
Highlighting the risks of an escalating conflict and the expansion of occupied areas, Aoun noted that the country must navigate its challenges through direct negotiations, which he sees as the only viable path to ending occupation and ensuring the return of displaced citizens.
Aoun further affirmed the state's responsibility for its territory and citizens, insisting that decisions must be made through legitimate institutions. He rejected the notion of any external party negotiating on Lebanon's behalf.
When questioned about a potential meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Aoun dismissed the likelihood, yet maintained that the presidency remains open to dialogue with all parties.
