Iran Establishes Temporary Safe Corridor in Strait of Hormuz Amidst US Tensions

London: Iran's Embassy in London has announced the creation of a temporary safe maritime corridor in the Strait of Hormuz, officially notifying the International Maritime Organization (IMO) of this development. The purpose of the corridor, according to Iran, is to counteract what it describes as threats from the United States, which it accuses of compromising the security of this strategic waterway by violating a war termination memorandum.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the embassy detailed in a statement on platform X that the Islamic Republic of Iran has formally implemented the memorandum of understanding to establish a safe corridor free of technical and military hindrances. The corridor's details were communicated to the IMO through notice S14/2026. The embassy criticized the United States for allegedly steering vessels towards an unsafe and legally dubious parallel route in the south, which it claimed increases the risk of maritime incidents.

The embassy further stated that US military actions, including attacks on Iran's port infrastructure and maritime monitoring installations, have escalated tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, making it a high-risk area for maritime traffic. The message called on those responsible for the situation to reevaluate their actions if they are genuinely interested in ensuring safe passage through the strait, emphasizing that security requires cooperation.

The embassy accused the United States of violating the war termination memorandum since July 7, attributing recent tensions in the Persian Gulf to these actions. Iran insists that the security of the Strait of Hormuz can only be maintained through respect for the sovereignty of littoral states, adherence to international maritime laws, and collaboration with arrangements specified by Tehran and Muscat.

Iran has consistently argued that maritime security in the Strait cannot be achieved through unilateral measures or political coercion. It calls on all parties seeking passage through the strait to abandon actions that escalate tensions and violate existing agreements.
