Tehran: Head of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations Kamal Kharazi stated that Iran remains open to negotiations over its nuclear energy program but will not compromise on its defensive capabilities or the peaceful enrichment of uranium.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Kharazi made these comments at a conference titled ‘International Law Under Assault: Aggression and Defense,’ organized by the Foreign Ministry’s Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS) in Tehran. The event was attended by diplomats and analysts from Iran and countries including France, Italy, Greece, Britain, Russia, Iraq, and Lebanon.
Kharazi emphasized, “We do not escape from negotiations; what we reject is any negotiation conducted under pressure, at gunpoint, or through acts of violence,” advising US President Donald Trump to pursue a constructive approach that fosters talks based on equality and mutual respect.
He further asserted Iran’s position, stating, “At the same time, you should understand that we will not abandon the peaceful use of enrichment, we will not forfeit our defensive power, and we will not sell off our independence.” Kharazi highlighted Iran’s resilience, citing its response to a 12-day conflict initiated by Israel on June 13, which was later joined by the United States.
Kharazi stressed that the Trump administration must recognize that Iran will not succumb to pressure. The backdrop to these comments involves ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington over Iran’s nuclear program, which were disrupted by Israel’s military actions targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities and other critical infrastructure. The conflict resulted in the assassination of scientists, senior military commanders, and the loss of over 1,000 civilian lives, prompting Iran to retaliate with drone and ballistic missile strikes inside Israel.
