Iran to Outline Position on Snapback Sanctions at Istanbul Meeting

Istanbul: Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, announced that Iran will present its stance on the snapback mechanism of sanctions during an upcoming meeting with the European trio in Istanbul on Friday.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Gharibabadi stated that the discussions are a continuation of recent conversations between the foreign ministers of the three European countries and the European Union’s foreign policy chief with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. The meeting in Istanbul aims to address diplomatic issues and specifically focus on the contentious snapback mechanism.

Gharibabadi criticized any efforts to invoke the snapback mechanism, labeling it “a completely unlawful measure.” He argued that the mechanism lacks legal standing, pointing out that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (J.C.P.O.A.) has not been implemented for seven years, particularly after the U.S. withdrawal and the subsequent suspension of European obligations. He questioned the basis on which Europe could demand actions from Iran under the current circumstances.

The Deputy Foreign Minister highlighted that the Istanbul meeting would be an opportunity for Iran to detail the risks associated with any European move to trigger the snapback mechanism. He reiterated Iran’s warnings about the potential consequences of such actions and expressed Iran’s interest in finding “mutual solutions to manage the situation.”
