Tehran: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has emphasized that transit corridors should not alter regional geopolitics or disrupt Iran’s access to other communication routes, stressing that all decisions and actions must uphold national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araghchi made these comments during a phone conversation with his Armenian counterpart, Ararat Mirzoyan, on Monday. The discussion took place four days after Armenia and Azerbaijan, both of which border Iran, signed a US-brokered peace deal aimed at resolving their ongoing territorial disputes.
Araghchi expressed support for the agreement and highlighted Iran’s concerns regarding connection routes and the reopening of communication networks. He stated, “This route must not lead to changes in the region’s geopolitics or cut off Iran’s access to other communication routes, and in every decision and action, full respect for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries must be observed.” His remarks referred to the Zangezur Corridor, which is set to be developed as part of the Armenia-Azerbaijan agreement.
In response, Mirzoyan emphasized that Yerevan prioritizes maintaining friendly relations with Tehran, based on good neighborliness and mutual interests, and considers these ties significant. He also acknowledged Iran’s principled stance on respecting Armenia’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty, as well as its awareness of geopolitical sensitivities and commitment to regional peace and stability.
Mirzoyan assured that Yerevan, in decision-making regarding communication routes, seriously considers regional peace and stability alongside the mutual interests and benefits of both Iran and Armenia.
