Tanzania: The Indian Ocean Memorandum of Understanding (IOMOU) on Port State Control has approved Iran’s proposal on remote ship inspections, as revealed by a senior official at the Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) of Iran. Allahmorad Afifipour, the organization’s director general for maritime affairs, confirmed the approval, which took place at the 27th IOMOU meeting in late August.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the Iranian proposal will be implemented within 12 months, with any necessary revisions being reported to the IOMOU committee. Afifipour emphasized that this method would enable member states to conduct timely inspections when physical access to ships is hindered by factors such as pandemics, security challenges, or uncrewed vessels. The initiative aims to ensure that ship safety inspections remain uninterrupted.
Additionally, the proposal is set to become an official document within the IOMOU framework, complementing the existing ship inspection methods employed in the Indian Oce
an region.
