Iran and Afghanistan Resolve Long-Standing Water Dispute: Envoy

Kabul: Iran's interim ambassador to Afghanistan, Alireza Bikdeli, has announced that a long-standing dispute between Afghanistan and Iran over shared water resources has been resolved following recent discussions. In an interview with TOLOnews, Bikdeli stated that Iran is committed to strengthening its relationship with Afghanistan as part of its 'neighborhood policy.'

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Bikdeli emphasized that enhancing economic ties with Afghanistan is a top priority for Tehran. Over the past nine months, Iran has engaged in more than $2 billion in trade with Afghanistan. Bikdeli expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations, anticipating greater success in advancing mutual interests in the coming year.

The resolution of the water rights issue was achieved through recent talks between the two countries. Bikdeli highlighted that during a visit by Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to Kabul, Afghan officials reaffirmed their commitment to the 1973 treaty. This treaty requires Afghanistan to ensure the flow of water from the Helmand River into Iran. However, the agreement has faced challenges, as Iran's share of water has been affected by excessive irrigation and dam construction in Afghanistan.

Bikdeli also commended Afghanistan for its measures against opium cultivation and drug trafficking. He highlighted Iran's readiness to collaborate with Afghanistan in combating drug smuggling and terrorism, emphasizing that the fight against terrorism and extremism remains a crucial area of cooperation between the two nations.
